Grade 6 titanium alloy (Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) is a medium-strength, α-phase single-phase titanium alloy containing 5% α-stabilizing element aluminum and 2.5% neutral element tin. It features excellent thermal strength and good weldability. This alloy cannot be strengthened through heat treatment and is typically used in the annealed condition. Its process plasticity is low, and sheet forming should be performed in a heated state. It has extremely high fracture toughness at both room and high temperatures. Like other titanium alloys, its tensile strength increases rapidly as temperature decreases. At liquid hydrogen temperatures, depending on the content of interstitial elements, a yield strength-to-density ratio of 1,200,000 to 1,500,000 can be achieved. As the interstitial element content increases, the yield strength and tensile strength increase correspondingly, while fracture toughness decreases.
Grade 6 titanium alloy can be used to manufacture casing shells, wall panels, and other components. Its long-term operating temperature can reach 500°C, while its short-term operating temperature can reach 800°C.
The extra-low interstitial (ELI) grade of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn titanium alloy is particularly suitable for use in cryogenic temperatures. When processed into thin sheets, it exhibits an excellent combination of toughness and strength at -483°F.
This alloy is easily welded using TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) or MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding. Normally, the toughness and strength of welded components should be equivalent to those of the base metal. However, in the presence of solid salts, its resistance to stress corrosion at high temperatures is somewhat lower than that of other commonly used titanium alloys. Additionally, if the alloy is used in contact with liquid or gaseous oxygen (at pressures above 50 psi), there is a severe risk of explosion.
